The Battle of Gettysburg: Why Was It a Turning Point? â€Å"Death created the modern American union, not just by ensuring national survival, but by shaping enduring national structures and commitments. The work of death was Civil War America s most fundamental and most demanding undertaking†Ã¢â‚¬â€ Drew Gilpin Faust. Death in the Civil War was indeed a principle in creating the America we know and love today. This was the bloodiest war in United States military history. Within the war was the Battle of Gettysburg, a battle that was engulfed in massive suffering and loss of life. July first through the third 1863, A rural town in the eastern United States, Gettysburg Pennsylvania, is host to the largest, most fierce, battle ever to occur on American soil. At the start, Rumors were circulating that Lee was marching his army over the Potomac river and into southern Pennsylvania. Eventually, solid military intelligence confirmed this, and with an equally sized army, under the command of Gen. George G. Meade, the Union began on a col lision course with the confederate army, and so began the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was a turning point because, the south’s morale declined while the north’s increased; northern casualties were lower than the south’s; and the north gained a geographical advantage from the battle. The noble savage, this is Rousseau view of human under the state of nature which means human by nature are good and what made them as bad is the civilization. Under civilization people start having material desire and become competitive, therefore human is no longer good. The social contract then appears with the aim of protection. â€Å"Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains† (1920, chapter 1). As Rousseau believe human is born free, so people would only enter the social contract if they remain â€Å"as free as before† and the contract insured self-governance of the collective. In the social contract, Rousseau said in order to achieve the equal freedom as before people have to give up part of their nature liberty which is restricted by†¦show more content†¦However, according to Rousseau’s explanation of general will in the social contract â€Å"There is often a great deal of difference between the will of all and the general will; the latter considers only the common interest, while the former takes private interest into account, and is no more than a sum of particular wills: but take away from these same will the pluses and minuses that cancel one another, and the general will remains as the sum of the differences.† (1920, chapter 3). This quote from Rousseau describes the general will as the sum of the difference which creates some confusion. (Plamenatz, 1963, P.393) As if understanding from the mathematical way which for example A has the will of x + a, B has the will of x + b and C has the will of x + c. Form â€Å"considers only the common interest† the general will would then be â€Å"x†, but according to what Rousseau said the general will would there for be the â€Å"sum of the difference† which is, therefore, the difference between A, B and C, â€Å"a + b + c†. From this result â€Å"a + b + c†, it clearly does not give an outline of what is general will as it does not s atisfy the basic feature of the general will. According to Rousseau the general will should be no factions, no debate, no major inequality and people are properly informed. The world around American school children is changing, but the public school system is failing to keep up with all the changes. Many programs that are in place were great 50+ years ago but now true reform is needed. The United States used to have the highest standards in the world for education. B. With so many budget cuts, the education of American children is suffering. There is little money for updated textbooks, new technology, and even to updated buildings. Many teachers reach into their own pockets to supply their classrooms even with the basics of paper and pencils. C. Taxes should be paying for world-class education in America, but the government is not using those dollars wisely. School district boards are in complete charge of how the money is distributed to each school. Not all schools will receive the same amount, some will get more and some will get less. 2. The public education system needs change. Children are getting further and further behind in math and science when compared to other countries. The No Child Left Behind law has some good goals but those goals are hard to achieve because the standards are set too high. It’s hard to judge what the standards are because each state has their own test for student achievement. A. Very little money for schools means no new textbooks or technology available to students. Cut backs also mean no counselors or school nurses on campus. Additionally, school buildings do not get much-needed repairs. B. Student/teacher ratios are too high. Teachers cannot give individual attention to students, and students struggle with keeping up with the curriculum. Poor performing teachers make the same amount of money as a good teacher. Tenure and the teacher’s union protect all teachers from any form of discipline. C. U. S. schools have failed to keep up with other countries in education. The common factor with all of the countries that have students achieving their standards is all students use the same curriculum and there is not a No Child Left Behind Law. The United States has the shortest school year and fewest amount of hours children spend in the classroom. 3. Research suggests that the U. S. ducation system could benefit from reform because there is very little money for schools; there are over-crowded classrooms with tenured teachers who are protected by the unions and other countries are surpassing America’s once great education system by leaps and bounds.
